A Classic Begins
The Ranger first debuted in 1983, replacing the Courier. It came with the option of four different engine choices, including a turbocharged diesel option as a collaboration between Ford and Mazda. The first-generation model got a new look in 1989, with new headlights, a new grille, and a redesigned hood and front fenders.
The Next Generation
The second generation was only a few years behind the facelift, coming to markets in 1993. It debuted a rounder and sleeker design, replacing the first Ranger’s boxy look. While the look was different, a lot of the mechanical aspects carried over including the engines, up until a revised suspension and frame were introduced in 1998. From 1998 until 2002, an innovative EV model was also offered in the Ranger’s lineup, but the trim’s lack of popularity caused it to be dropped. Ford worked with Mazda on the second-generation truck, which is how the vehicle ended up getting rebadged as the Mazda B-Series from 1994 until 2009. The two models were identical except for the brand name.
The Ranger Returns
The second generation of the Ford Ranger ended in 2011 when the Ranger nameplate was seemingly discontinued and vanished from the market. It was absent until Ford announced the 2019 model’s return as a third-generation truck. An all-new design and new engine options lend the 2019 Ford Ranger a more advanced and modern look and feel, and modern truck buyers will have yet another option in the trendy mid-size truck segment.
